According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Sudan is one of the most affected by STDs and STIs countries in the world. Nearly 35% of all Sudanese males have an STD or STI with Gonorrhea being the most common. Among these, almost half of them report being infected by a sex worker. Women in Sudan represent the demographics group which is the most exposed to STDs and STIs in the entire world. Given the fact that official numbers are difficult to obtain and verify, the real number of infected people or those at risk of infection might be truly staggering.

During a social event organized by UNICEF in Johannesburg, South Africa, Lab-Away co-founder and CTO Pavlin Hristov said that the idea about his company was born during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Rapid COVID-19 tests were all over the place back then. People didn’t have to spend hundreds of euros to go to fancy labs to get tested. We could do it safely, quickly, and reliably at home. At some point we were asking ourselves, what other diseases and infections can be tested for in a similar manner – combining the safety of home and reliability of a medical facility. That’s how we came up with the concept of Lab-Away”, explained Hristov.

Hristov, who completed his education in Switzerland and worked for IBM before co-founding Lab-Away, will be heading to London soon to finalize his company’s partnership with Badoo, a dating app, which will offer its more than 300 million active users the Lab-Away at-home STD tests directly within its app.

“It’s been just over an year since we started and we’re already partnering with major organizations and companies. What makes our tests really unique is that they deliver results quickly – in a matter of minutes – and that patients don’t need to send test samples to a lab or anything. It’s super quick, safe, and efficient.”, added Hristov.
