Nagpur: There is confusion about admissions to state board junior college science stream for CBSE X students who opted for basic level of maths in Std X.
The easier version of maths was offered by CBSE at Std X level, especially for those students who did not wish to pursue maths at higher education level. But only for the upcoming academic session, CBSE has allowed such students to take up maths in Std XI as well.
On whether these students can take up regular maths in state junior colleges, a state education department official said, “Such decisions are taken at board headquarters or mantralaya. At Nagpur level, we only implement their circulars. So far no such thing has been told to us.”
But if one goes by precedent, such students (who opted for basic maths) would not be allowed admissions. “Earlier in Maharashtra also, we had a simpler version of maths at Std X level. Such students were not allowed to take up regular maths at HSC level,” said the official.
That option of simpler version of maths in state board was stopped in 2018. And CBSE started it in 2019.
“CBSE may have allowed their students, but that does not mean we have to follow it,” said the education official and added, “There is a system in place and we must not change it for anyone. CBSE is well within their rights to give such concession, but it will be unfair if state board did the same,” he said.
Such a concession will allow students to appear for JEE even though they opted for basic maths version. “These students were well aware that they cannot appear for engineering entrance exam after Std XII if they take basic level of maths at Std X. So to allow them to bypass that rule in our state board is not right. I hope that that state board does not provide them the same leniency,” said the official.
