On Tuesday, health officials released data showing how cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis cases have been on the rise, but doctors are optimistic that an older antibiotic will help battle such commonly occurring sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), the Associated Press is reporting.
Some possible reasons STDs are on the rise could include a decrease in condom use, insufficient sex education and reduced testing during the COVID-19 pandemic, the report said.
However, doctors see hope in doxycycline, an inexpensive antibiotic which has been on the market for over 50 years, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is now recommending use of doxycycline as a sort of morning-after pill for preventing STDs, the report said.
Used to treat a wide range of infections, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine last week showed doxycycline’s potential to prevent sexually transmitted diseases.
