NAGPUR: Around 90% of applicants for junior college seats in the city have been allotted their first or second preference seats under the Common Admission Process (CAP). TOI accessed the statistical analysis data of seat allotment for Nagpur city, which revealed that nearly 17,500 students have been allotted seats in Round-1 of the CAP.

The Round-1 allotment list will be released at 10am on Wednesday.
In Round-1, a little over of 40,000 seats were up for grabs and almost 24,000 applications had come in. Final allotment was done for just over 17,000 seats based on the preferences opted by the students in the online CAP form.
CAP is a mandatory and completely online process — consisting of two phases, officially known as Part-1 and Part-2. In Part-1, students fill up a form wherein personal and Std X school details are filled in. Part-2 kicks in once Std X board results are declared, and students have to enter their marks in the CAP database. It is in this phase the applicants have to select the stream and also mark colleges where they wish to study. Maximum 10 colleges, in order of preference, can be chosen.
CAP software then prepares a merit list based on the marks entered by the students and then the allotment process starts.
A junior college principal, who did not wish to be identified, said, “The education department is literally forcing CAP on Nagpur junior colleges. Every year, an average of 20,000 seats remain vacant, hence it is illogical to conduct CAP when everyone is guaranteed admission.”
Ravindra Fadnavis, general secretary of Maharashtra Rajya Shikshan Sanstha Mahasangh, has been spearheading the campaign to question the government on its logic for holding the CAP.
Speaking to TOI earlier, Fadnavis had said, “What is the logic of not holding CAP for junior colleges located just outside city limits? Either do it for all, or no one. Last year, Aurangabad got exemption from the mandatory CAP and I think it should happen for Nagpur too.”
CAP is mandatory for institutes located within city limits. Apart from Nagpur, CAP is applicable for urban areas like Mumbai, Amravati, Nashik and Pune.
Once the allotment list is made public on Wednesday morning, students have time till August 6 to complete admission formalities. Then the vacant seats are carried forward to the next round.
