Sexual health: Gynaecologist lists 5 most important things every woman should know

Poor sexual health can lead to different sexual health infections and even internal injuries

Sexual health is an integral part of being healthy. However, the awareness around the topic is not really up to the mark. The World Health Organization (WHO) defined sexual health as a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality.

It does not only include the prevention of diseases but a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence.

According to several reports, women are at higher risk of poor sexual health regarding sexually transmitted infections and other related problems.

Dr Gandhali Deorukhkar, a Consultant of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai shared 5 most essential things every women should know about sexual health.

Risk of STDs

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), reproductive tract infections (RTIs) are a few health diseases that poses a major risk. The expert advised to ask and get to know about the STD or any other disease’s history.

Contraceptives

Protected intercourse is always the best approach to prevent all sexually transmitted diseases. The expert said that even if the female is on contraceptive pills, it is necessary for the male partner to use condoms as well.

Wash after action

After the intercourse, ensure that you wash your sexual parts to prevent infections. It will not only help enhance vaginal health but also prevent skin irritation, various infections and risk of unpleasant odors.

Improving libido

Adding a few nutrients in your diet can help increase libido and improve sexual health. Antioxidant rich food liker blueberries, strawberries, dark chocolate are known to increase your libido. Almonds, apples are also linked with increasing libido.

Beware of injuries

Dr Deorukhkar informed that there have been several cases where the women has been seen with internal injuries. Inserting foreign substances forcefully can induce injuries. She advised that these substances can tear inside of vagina
