Pune: The state education department will implement a bridge course before beginning lessons in the upcoming academic year.
The decision was taken after considering learning losses during the two years of Covid-19 and the poor performance of the students in the ASER report as well as the National Achievement Survey.
Last year, activity guidelines in the name of a bridge course were given to the teachers online. This year, Maharashtra State Council of Education, Research and Training has decided to print workbooks for students from Std II to X which will be distributed at the beginning of the academic year.
A pre-course and post-course examination will be taken to gauge the effectiveness of the 15-day bridge course in achieving the required learning outcomes in students. They will then be taught the syllabus for the academic year 2023-24.
Detailed guidelines on activities by teachers, students, and parents were given last year too but it was online and up to the teachers to take a printout and implement them. While some did, others did not for various reasons.
“This year, we decided to publish a workbook that students can write and practise in. The books will be out for print and ready within a month’s time. They will then be distributed to the government and aided schools for students,” Ramakant Kathmore, joint director of the State Council of Educational Research and Training, said.
“In the bridge course designed for about 15 days, the students will revise competencies of the previous year. A Std VII student will go over important topics from class VI. There will be a pre-test and post-test to check the effectiveness of the course across the state. This will give us an idea of where the students stand in terms of class-appropriate learning,” Ajaykumar Funde, lecturer, department of English language at SCERT, said.
Last year, a 30-day bridge course started from June 20. For Vidarbha students, the exercise started on July 25.
SCERT had conducted a 45-day bridge course in 2021 online too after teachers expressed the need for revising the previous topics to clear doubts among students.
Topics were selected on important units in the previous classes. The course was student-centric and the online links for reference material were shared with them.
Test papers were available on the website. Students could solve one worksheet per day. Post-course assessments were to be made available on the website, MD Singh, director of the bridge course, had said.
